Very good! Tomorrow makes a whopping 30 years since Lt. Col. Antonio Tejero, commanding a group of armed civilian guards, burst into the House of Representatives, in full investiture vote of Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, putting españolitos all the heart in a fist.
The story, I guess you probably know well and if not, there are better places than this to know how the events took place that day. I'm going to count as that lived in first person ...
everyone !!!... Stay They are hell! ... To read my memories of the February 23, 1981. ;)
At the time, had only 11 years old living ... Aaaah ... that nostalgia ... !. Would be at that time was 6 of EGB My brother and I, who was two years younger, we'd come home from school. We went and came on alone since I was 9. My school was called Hernando de Soto in the neighborhood Aluche (Madrid), and was about twenty minutes walk from my house. There was, then eating, because mothers usually were bundled with home chores. So I had to do the road four times a day, to eat in house and then get the hell out again. But times were different .... Nobody is shocked that two children were alone in the street. Now, you be labeled a bad father unconscious or at least, for leaving the kids with these ages, at the mercy of the dangers that lurk around every corner.
The case is that I clearly remember that day, February 23, 1981, when after the Cole and now at home with my mother in the sewing room which outside, sitting in the chair, my father was in the bedroom throwing nap, terrified out of the room, shouting something unintelligible that sounded between cue and blasphemy ... Transistor having picked up the liquor cabinet and began a desperate search for stations ... I was there, motionless. Among scared and stunned, watching the scene. Something important was happening. Papa, what happens? so I said almost in unison with my mother who dropped her sewing box. "There has been shot in the Congress of Deputies.'ve Entered civilian guards at gunpoint," he explained nervously, trying to find a station to say something about what was happening ...
good thing to have his age, is that you're not very aware of the magnitude of events. I live like a novelty that breaks the routine, a kind of adventure, like something like a game. Only that something makes you feel that it is not. The faces of my parents' concern was a sign that it was no joke. The seat from which issued RTVE had been taken, so there was no issue, while most radio stations, only military marches sounded ... to affright if repeated the story today ... Bufff!
That night I slept very late. I guess my parents, aware that he was living something historic not sent me to bed at the usual time. It was announced that the King would issue a televised, but the thing was made to wait because apparently had little problems to reach the mobile unit to the Palacio de la Zarzuela, so make time to cast a very funny movie "The wonder of Brooklyn "(1949), with the great Danny Kaye ... As boxed the guy, the rhythm of the music of the Blue Danube Waltz ... ja ja ja! At last came the retransmission of the message of the King, and peak at about 1 am. I have not quite crystal clear in my memory, so I conclude that either fried or simply left me, I'm not aware much of the sheath that had ... But history says that their intervention was key to the failure of the coup attempt.
I slept with the hope and notice you that things have a kid at that age, would not the next day cole. He was the reminder that when Franco died classes were suspended. But no, no such luck. We woke my brother and me at the same time of any day during the week. We take our cola-cao with milk and cookies, we took the backpacks for school at the usual time.
But something was different. On the streets with people we barely crossed, or with other children and friends at the school gates. Just in the classroom we were a dozen children. Then in each class would have about forty-odd students ... Which last !!!... the truth is that while we complain about public education today, at least that has been improved.
In view of the panorama, we were sent back home, I guess many people would be afraid of what might happen. Luckily, my mother had gone out to buy. When he saw us come so quickly, it scared the poor. "What are you doing here? said alarmed. We have sent for home, while almost hit reply in haste in the hall and throwing the bags where we caught, competing with my brother for the first turn on the television ....

Je je, in that we have not changed with the kids now. The difference is that by then we had only two channels to choose from. The 1 and UHF. But I swallowed what was and what made it special, the fact that a day of school, we were at home watching TV. I remember I put a movie with laughter. Road to Bali (1952) with Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour.
few days later, once things had returned to relative normality, the 2nd of March ... Real Madrid played the final of the European Cup with Liverpool in Paris, which lost by 1-0 and missed a Camacho goal against the goalkeeper when trying to make a Vaseline a few minutes left that would have been a draw and hoping to trace ... That swollen to mourn, for God !!... On the eve of the match, I remember a sign of English fans, with a drawing of a gun Tejero and the legend "Tejero is here." It's funny, but then I had the feeling, that we were the laughing stock of Europe.
We congratulate all the English that fortunately did not succeed coup and that we have a country where even with corruption, unemployment, crisis, terrorism ... we enjoy each and every one of us, the rights and freedoms disfrutamos.
Viva España !!!... ups, lo siento... me ha salido del alma.
